Mrs Khu is a work inspired by my grandpa’s story (of ghost marriage). I felt like it’s deeply connected to my life, so I transformed it into the main concept of this work.
My grandparents both passed away a couple years ago, their house remains spiritually empty. After my two uncles inherited the house, it became a gathering place for the family. Occasionally my grandparents house becomes full of life.
I imagine multiple dimensions exist in this house, the spirits still live there just no one can see them. I want to convey through filming this space with no one there, the house still has a strong sense of ‘eveydayness’.
I particularly like the scene where my mum is chatting with an unknown old lady in the beginning of the video. Mum said that, if her mother (my grandma) was still alive, she would be at a similar age as this lady. This conversation resonates well with my exploration of ghost marriage. It is a multi-layered imagination. Even though one is dead, they would keep on their life in another dimension: going to school, falling in love, getting married, having kids and then getting old, etc..
I attempt to dig into different aspects which extend from my family’s ghost marriage. A commonality between the ghost marriage stories is that due to tradition, the brides names have been hidden. Females are more like belongings or property in their families. During the research process, I tried to find her full names so I can better connect to her story. However, after I finished the video, her name is still missing; her existence was not complete.
